Buy Christmas Ornaments / Baubles – A Guide

Christmas ornaments are just one type of Christmas Decortations. Christmas ornaments are typlically also called Christmas Baubles and are generally made of glass, metal, wood or ceramics and are often seen on Christmas trees however they can be used to decorate Christmas tables or sideboards.

Christmas Baubles have been around since at least 1847 and are a staple element in any home’s Christmas decoration.

The glass variety was first made in Germany by Hans Greiner who is said to have blown into glass as he couldn’t afford the traditional decorations at the time – nuts, apples and sweets. At first he mimmicked the design of these gifts and went for a shiney colour by using mercury or lead (I’m not sure how long he lived for!).

In the 1880′s F W Woolworth discovered these baubles and then started exporting them from Germnay. F W Woolworth started the American campany of his name which became a seperate entity in the UK in 1982 who seem to be very popular for Christmas decorations to this day.

From the 1920′s Christmas ornaments were starting to be mass-produced at the Lauscha glassworks and this contintued up until the second world war where it was ceased production.

Today there are about 20 small glass works in Lauscha that sprung up after the Berlin Wall came down and they continue to create some fine Christmas Baubles.

Christmas Ornaments & Baubles Buying Guide

Choosing which Christmas Ornaments or Baubles to buy is all about “theme”. Work out what colour scheme you’re going to have and try and stick to it. You’ll typlically have the mass-produced plastic baubles to choose from, but consider nice glass ones as it’ll just add a bit more quality to the room.

You may also like to break the theme if there is a special occassion such as a new baby in the family. Below you can see some baubles that you can get for your baby’s first Christmas.

Christmas shops also do personalised Christmas baubles which can be a nice gift if you’re spending a first Christmas with someone special!
